Llanfairpwllgwyngyll is a village located on the island of Anglesey, Wales, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is also known under the following denominations: Llanfairpwll, Llanfair PG and the longest one which is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. The longest form was made up in the 1860s for promotional and touristic purposes and to this date is the longest place name in Europe as well as the second longest place name in the whole world.
The main settlement of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll is composed of two smaller parts, the first one being Llanfairpwllgwyngyll-uchaf — Upper Llanfairpwllgwyngyll in English — and the second, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll-isaf — Lower Llanfairpwllgwyngyll in English. These smaller villages are sometimes referred in Welsh as Pentre Uchaf and Pentre Isaf (Upper Village and Lower Village in English).
Concerning the demographics, the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll had, according to the 2001 British census, a population of 3,040 permanent residents of whom 76% were fluent speakers of Welsh, a Celtic language spoken by roughly 750,000 native speakers worldwide. The longest name of the settlement which is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, consisting of 58 characters, makes the locality the longest named one on the European continent and the second longest named place in the whole world, just after the name of a hill located in the North Island of New Zealand with 85 characters, namely Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu.
Translated from Welsh to English, the longest form of the village’s name literally means: ‘Saint Mary’s Church in a hollow of white hazel near the swirling whirlpool of the church of Saint Tysilio with a red cave’.
